NEW RELEASES

The track “Put Some Red On It” is a wildly-performed, sleazy and bass-y take on the usually all-too-macabre story of conflict/blood diamonds. Written and sung with Spoek’s spouse, Ana Rab, the dark duet cleverly articulates the tensions that lie behind the diamond market, while slyly telling a true South African story.

The track will be featured on the Put Some Red On It EP with another new production and remixes by Shabazz Palaces, Machinedrum, Telepathe & DJ Rashad. The entire EP was produced by Spoek Mathambo in collaboration with Copenhagen-based future-bass artist, Chllngr. They succeeded in creating works that show exciting signs of the maturity that Spoek is reaching in both his songwriting and production work.

The EP will be available as a digital-only release in late July 2011.

In general, whenever someone starts a sentence with the phrase, ‘I don’t mean to be rude’, you should be worried, brace yourself for some low down and dirty rudeness or run for the hills like a p*y.

In this case, Spoek Mathambo is inviting you to join in on the dirty fun with the third single ‘Don’t Mean To Be Rude’ from his debut album ‘Mshini Wam’. The South African wunderkind is bringing the rudeness via an accelerated skank courtesy of London bass rangers LV (most widely known for their epic releases on Hyperdub). Canadian avant soul singer Zaki Ibrahim plays the co-conspirator on the bassy nugget adding something sweet to Spoek’s gutter mouth party song.

Levels go peak with an allstar team of remixers… Yep, we went for Olympic Gold on this one! UK bass music impresario, Scratcha DVA (UK, Hyperdub – Rinse FM), froggy party ! killers, Toadally Krossed Out (USA, Mad Decent) and French club ambassador, Don Rimini (FR, Mental Groove) brought in the medals with their club remixes.

Dummy Magazine says,
*Spoek Mathambo Mshini Wam [BBE] The urgent debut of South African rap’s expressive star is a bracing, brilliant listen.

Debut album by Johannesburg’s “post-Apartheid, post-hip hop” rapper/producer/graphic designer Spoek Mathambo, one of the strongest voices in a strong scene. New wave for a multi-polar world – Spoek has bleep techno, electro, kwaito house and hip hop running through his bones, but the really revelatory thing about the album is how he combines a thrilling percussive heart with an expressive, witty and poetic soul.

Thunder’ is both rattling and moving, the Joy Division-paraphrasing ‘Control’ is witty and fun, the 1 minute jam March For Union Buildings shows off the breadth of his experimental tendencies, ‘Mshini Wam pt II’ is as rambunctious a work out as Mujava’s made, and ‘Let Them Talk’ has a heartbreaking vocal from Zaki Ibrahim.*

Proud to present you the complete single release of Mshini Wam b/w Gwababa (Don’t Be Scared) by Spoek Mathambo, for sure one of the most exciting artists of the global electronic club music scene right now. The remixes are done by an internation array of club legends: BBQ, Bara Bröst, Schlachthofbronx, DJ Rashad (Ghetto Tekz), Affie Yusuf, Krazy Fiesta, DJ Mpula (Batida), Marvy Da Pimp, and Subtitle (Briefcase Rockers).
